Search changed shape in 2026. People still Google, but a growing slice of every buying decision now runs through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s own AI Overviews before a human ever clicks a blue link. If you sell software, get found by an AI answer, or just try to earn traffic, the numbers below are the ones that matter this year.

We pulled together 130+ AI SEO statistics for 2026 and cited every single one to its source, with the month it was published. No stat goes on this page unless we could trace it to the study, survey or dataset it came from. Where a figure is contested, we say so.

This is a living page. We refresh it as new studies land, so the figures reflect what is current, not what was true a year ago.

68%
of Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60% in 2024
SparkToro, 2026
How we compiled this, our sources and method

What this page is. A curated, cited roundup of third-party AI search statistics published in 2025 and 2026. The Topickz research desk collected, checked and organized these figures. We did not run these studies ourselves, and we never present another firm’s data as our own.

Sourcing bar. Every stat links to a source and carries a publication month. We prioritized primary sources: the study, survey or dataset that first reported the figure. Where the primary was paywalled, we cite a reputable secondary report (Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land) and label it as such.

What we dropped. Figures we could not trace to a real, fetchable source were left out, even popular ones. Several widely-repeated numbers (a “93% zero-click under AI Mode” claim, a “schema markup = 2.3x more AI answers” claim) failed verification and are not on this page. Where two credible sources disagree, we show both rather than pick one.

Freshness. We update this page as new research is published. Figures dated 2024 are included only when they remain the landmark reference (for example, Gartner’s 25%-decline forecast).

What these AI SEO statistics mean for 2026

Two forces are pulling in opposite directions, and both are on this page. Search is getting bigger, not smaller. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI features together reach billions of people, and adoption is still climbing. At the same time, the click is getting rarer. Zero-click hit 68%, AI Overviews cut CTR by more than half on the top result, and users trust the summary enough to stop there.

The winners are the brands that get cited inside the answer. Citation earns 120% more clicks on Google, and 89% of unbranded prompts get answered from third-party sources, which means the game is now about being the source AI reaches for, not just ranking a page. Reviews, original data, statistics-rich content and a strong brand-mention footprint are what correlate with citation.

For anyone selling software, the buyer stat is the one to sit with. 51% of B2B buyers now open an AI chatbot before Google, 33% bought from a vendor they had never heard of, and 85% think more highly of a vendor an AI names. That is the whole reason this shift matters. The AI answer is the new shortlist.
